History

IPTA was established in 1987 to represent the interests of the specialised chemical/parcel tanker fleet and has since developed into an internationally acknowledged representative body for ship owners operating IMO classified chemical/parcel tankers. IPTA is recognised as a focal point through which regulatory authorities and trade organisations may liaise with such owners. In recognition of its expertise in the chemical/parcel tanker sector IPTA was granted consultative status as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to the International Maritime Organisation in 1997 and is wholly supportive of the IMO as the only organisation to determine the need for international maritime legislation and its subsequent introduction and monitoring for the chemical/parcel tanker fleet.

Health, Safety and the Environment

IPTA members are committed to the enhancement of Maritime Safety, the protection of the Marine Environment and the reduction of atmospheric pollution from shipping.

Our members acknowledge and fully support the work being undertaken by the International  Maritime Organisation in this respect.

We are also active members at other safety focused Industry led workshops and Groups. ( ILG, HEIG )

Our current safety campaign is focused on Enclosed Space Entry fatalities in general and in cargo tanks in particular and we are helping to promote the use of Wash Water Analysis with Spectrometers within the industry as a way of reducing the need to enter into cargo tanks during a tank washing procedure.

We have also co-sponsored Industry papers on the safety of seafarers in the Black Sea and transiting the red sea area.
